Weightlifting for Women: It's Not Scary, It's Sexy!

Expert Author AJ James

Images of She-Hulk and oiled 80's body-building women are what spring to mind for most gals that first consider weight lifting to lose weight or get in shape. But that's not what regular weight lifting does for a woman's body. Weight lifting does build strength, but not so much you have to worry about your body looking bulky or masculine. Think of it this way: Marilyn Monroe lifted weights regularly. And she was one curvaceous, feminine gal! She's not the only one. Numerous Hollywood actresses and models lift weights to keep their bodies sexy and toned.
A woman's body is made to lift.
It's not just guys that can lift heavy things: a woman's body is designed to lift, too! Women have been lifting, hauling, carting, dragging and otherwise putting those biceps to good use for millennia. It's all about lifting what's heavy (but tolerable) for you and increasing your load as your body gets stronger.
I don't want to look like a dude!
You won't. Men look like men and build muscle like men because of a variety of muscle-bulking hormones, including testosterone. Ladies have some of those hormones, too, but not enough to make growing to hulk proportions easy. Even guys have to work to put on those inches of muscle. What weight lifting DOES give you is sleek, sexy, curvaceous muscle that's toned.
I just want to lose weight...
Lifting weights, contrary to popular belief, doesn't just build muscle. It also helps burn fat!Even after you stop lifting, your body is still consuming fat for fuel. And lifting heavy things sends the signals to your body to prefer burning fat instead of consuming muscle for fuel. That's right, your body can catabolize, or eat muscle, for fuel. And it'll do that if you exercise for long periods, such as over-doing it in cardio exercises. And if you build just a bit of muscle, that muscle becomes a maintenance item for your body. It has to burn energy (fat!) to maintain it. So even while resting, your muscles are helping you lose weight. And once that fat burns away, what's left is a strong, capable body with tone and definition.
And that's not all!
According to a study by the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, lifting weights helps build bone density. This counter-acts the pre-cursors of Osteoporosis, a bone disease that affects many women and makes their bones more fragile and easy to break.
Have fun!
You don't have to lift weights in a gym or cooped up in your room. Kettle bells and free weights travel! Climbing trees is lifting weights - it's lifting your body weight. Rearranging your furniture to make your house Feng Shui is heavy lifting, and playing with your kids out in a park (because they always want to be lifted onto the slide or the swing) counts! Enjoy lifting weights, and enjoy the sexy body it produces.
